In a rapidly digitizing world, artificial intelligence (AI) is being embraced across nearly every sector of Canadian society, from classrooms and courtrooms to customer service and creative industries. But as AI tools become increasingly accessible and powerful, a key question arises: Does the use of AI negatively impact our ability to think critically?

While AI presents profound benefits in efficiency, data analysis, and decision support, many educators, ethicists, and psychologists caution that over-reliance on AI could contribute to a decline in essential human cognitive functions; particularly critical thinking.

Canadian Ministry of Artificial Intelligence

In a landmark move reflecting the growing influence of artificial intelligence on national policy, the Government of Canada has announced the creation of a new federal Ministry of Artificial Intelligence.

This dedicated ministry will oversee the ethical development, deployment, and regulation of AI technologies across all sectors, including healthcare, education, defence, and public infrastructure.

Positioned as a global leader in AI innovation and governance, Canada aims to ensure that the rapid evolution of machine learning, deep learning, and sophisticated automation aligns with national values such as transparency, equity, and privacy.

The new ministry will work closely with academic institutions, private industry, and international partners to craft forward-looking legislation, fund responsible AI research, and safeguard Canadian interests in an increasingly algorithm-driven world.

Is AI a Good Thing?

Artificial intelligence is neither inherently good nor bad; it is a tool, and its impact depends on how it is developed, deployed, and used.

In the Canadian context, AI offers significant benefits, from improving healthcare diagnostics to enhancing public service delivery and advancing climate research.

However, its influence on critical thinking is more complex. When used thoughtfully, AI can support Canadian learners and professionals by providing new insights, sparking curiosity, and automating routine tasks to free up cognitive space. Yet, over-reliance on AI-generated answers risks weakening the essential human skill of questioning assumptions, evaluating evidence, and forming independent judgments.

The key challenge for Canada is to ensure AI supports – not substitutes – critical thought, encouraging citizens to engage with technology critically rather than passively.

The Nature of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is the disciplined process of actively analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information to guide belief and action. It is not simply logical reasoning, but also a reflective practice grounded in skepticism, context, and creativity. As John Dewey, the father of modern education theory, wrote:

“A problem well put is half solved.”

This quote underscores the importance of how we engage with problems, not just in solving them, but in framing them appropriately in the first place. That framing often requires patience, insight, and judgment, qualities that cannot be outsourced to an algorithm.

The Role of AI in Cognitive Delegation

AI is designed to automate tasks that would otherwise require human effort. In doing so, it relieves cognitive burdens, much like calculators once did for arithmetic or GPS systems for navigation. But as we increasingly offload decision-making and idea generation to AI systems (from ChatGPT to Midjourney to automated resume screeners), we risk losing touch with the deeper cognitive work these tasks require.

For instance, AI can compose essays, generate code, or summarize articles in seconds. While this enables productivity, it may also short-circuit the user’s engagement with the subject matter. Instead of wrestling with uncertainty or ambiguity, two core components of critical thought, the human user might passively accept AI outputs without verification or reflection. As Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan warned,

“Every extension is also an amputation.”

In this context, AI may extend our mental reach but simultaneously dull our capacity for deliberate thinking.

The Educational Implications in Canada

Educators across Canada are now grappling with this very issue. According to a 2024 Canadian Digital Learning Report, 68% of post-secondary instructors believe that AI has made students more passive in their learning habits. In response, many institutions are adjusting curricula to emphasize process over product, encouraging students to critique, reinterpret, and fact-check AI-generated content.

Moreover, a recent position paper from the Canadian Association for Educational Psychology argues that:

“Students must be taught to see AI as a collaborator, not a crutch. Critical thinking should be exercised not only despite AI, but because of it.”

This shift in educational focus, from AI as a tool of convenience to a subject of scrutiny, may be vital to preserving the intellectual rigour that a democratic society demands.

The Double-Edged Sword in Canadian Policy and Innovation

Canada has positioned itself as a global leader in AI research and ethics. The Montreal Declaration for Responsible AI and the federal government’s Directive on Automated Decision-Making both reflect a commitment to using AI responsibly. However, the danger lies not in the technology itself, but in uncritical adoption.

The speed and fluency of AI outputs can create a false sense of competence. For example, a municipal planner using an AI tool to predict urban traffic flow may not question the dataset’s historical bias or underlying assumptions. Without critical interrogation, such tools can perpetuate flawed logic, reinforce inequities, and mask complexity.

Is Social Bias a Serious Concern in AI Responses?

Yes, social bias can influence the responses provided by AI, and concerns about the influence of powerful individuals or corporations over AI platforms are both valid and increasingly relevant.

AI systems are trained on vast datasets that reflect the social, political, and cultural environments in which they are created; environments that are often shaped by historical inequities and dominant ideologies. This means biases, both overt and subtle, can be embedded in the data and algorithms, affecting the neutrality of AI responses.

Furthermore, when AI platforms are owned or controlled by billionaires or large tech companies, there is potential for those entities to shape the system’s behaviour, either deliberately or through the design of algorithms that reflect their priorities or values.

In a democratic society like Canada, it is crucial to have transparent oversight, public accountability, and diverse input in AI governance to safeguard against the undue influence of concentrated wealth or ideology, ensuring AI serves the broader public interest rather than narrow agendas.

A Balanced Future: AI and Human Judgment

To be clear, AI is not inherently detrimental to critical thinking. In fact, when used properly, it can stimulate deeper inquiry. A writer might use an AI tool to explore alternative sentence structures, a scientist to generate new hypotheses, or a policymaker to simulate long-term outcomes. The key is not to surrender thought to AI, but to use AI as a lens through which thought can be challenged and sharpened.

The late Canadian cognitive scientist John Ralston Saul once observed:

“Freedom is the opposite of rational efficiency.”

In this spirit, true human reasoning must retain the freedom to be inefficient, uncertain, and creative, traits that AI, for all its brilliance, cannot authentically replicate.

The rise of AI does not spell the end of critical thinking, but it does demand a reevaluation of how we think. In Canada, where innovation is valued alongside education and public trust, the conversation should focus not on resisting AI but on cultivating the skills to question it. We must teach ourselves, and the next generation, not only how to use AI, but when not to. Critical thinking in the age of artificial intelligence is not obsolete; it is more essential than ever.
