“Street photography is not about the streets. It is about the people who live, breathe, and move through them — unguarded, unposed, and infinitely human.” – MJ Martin

It is July 2025, and I am back in Niagara Falls, Canada capturing street photography images. This is one of my favourite forms of imagery currently. This trip I am making use of the Nikon Z9 camera body with the 180-600mm lens. All images are taken with the aperture wide open at f/5.6 in order to create the soft bokeh in the background.

The Essence of Street Photography: What It Means to Me

Street photography, at its core, is about truth. It is the unfiltered pulse of humanity, captured one frame at a time. For me, it is not about perfection, technique, or staging; it is about presence. It is about observing life as it unfolds and being ready to honour it with my lens.

There is something profoundly moving about capturing people who are unaware of the camera. Their faces, their gestures, even the way they walk or pause at the wall with the raging torrent blasting behind them; all of it reveals who they are in that fleeting moment. When I photograph someone laughing with a friend, lost in thought while sitting quietly on the wall, or hurrying through the mist cast off from the Falls, I am not just taking a picture; I am preserving a feeling, a truth, a story that would otherwise vanish into the noise of everyday life.

Street photography, for me, is about empathy. It challenges me to pay attention, not just to the surface of things but to the subtle signals of mood and emotion. A furrowed brow. A quiet smile. Tension in the shoulders. These moments are more than visual; they are emotional cues, and they connect us across language, culture, and distance.

In a world of selfies and curated content, street photography is refreshingly honest. It reminds me that beauty is not posed. It is raw, unpredictable, and alive. And perhaps most importantly, it teaches me to be patient; to wait, to watch, and to honour the dignity of people just as they are.
