A Long-Awaited Successor

Is this the one? I have long desired to own one of the super zoom cameras. I choice was typically limited to Nikon or Sony. Yes, others exist and O suspect that they are all excellent too. This is just my personal preference. The new Sony looked very promising but now that we know more, I am not sure that it possesses to enhancements that I hoped it would deliver to us all. Here is my assessment of the new Sony RX10 V Supper Zoom camera.
Sony’s announcement of the RX10 V on July 9, 2026, is surprisingly significant. After almost nine years without a new RX10 model, many photographers assumed that smartphones and interchangeable-lens cameras had eliminated the premium bridge-camera market. Instead, Sony has returned with an ambitious all-in-one camera aimed at wildlife, travel, aviation, sports and multimedia photography. It will arrive in August 2026 at a suggested Canadian price of $2,899.99.
The One-Inch Stacked Image Sensor

At the centre of the RX10 V is a 20.1-megapixel, 13.2 by 8.8 millimetre, one-inch-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor. The stacked architecture allows faster data readout than a conventional sensor, supporting blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second with full autofocus and auto-exposure tracking. Sony claims as many as 60 autofocus and auto-exposure calculations per second, while 575 phase-detection points cover approximately 70.6 percent of the image area.
The sensor is fast, but it is not revolutionary. Its resolution and physical dimensions remain closely aligned with the RX10 IV. Nine years after that camera appeared, I would have preferred a newer sensor offering greater dynamic range, improved high-ISO performance or perhaps 24 megapixels. A one-inch sensor cannot match the tonal depth, low-light performance or shallow depth of field of APS-C or full-frame cameras. Sony’s newer BIONZ XR processor should improve noise reduction, colour reproduction and responsiveness, but processing cannot completely overcome the limitations of sensor area.
The Extraordinary 24–600mm Lens

The real reason to buy the RX10 V is its permanently attached ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24–600mm-equivalent f/2.4–4 lens. This 25-times optical zoom contains eight extra-low-dispersion elements, including two aspherical ED elements, and incorporates optical image stabilization. It can focus approximately three centimetres from the subject at 24mm and 72 centimetres at 600mm, providing useful wide-angle macro and tele-macro capabilities.
This lens is the camera’s defining value proposition. A photographer can move from landscapes and environmental portraits to distant birds, aircraft or sporting action without changing lenses. For travel, hiking and documentary work, that means less equipment, fewer exposed sensor changes and fewer missed photographs. At approximately 1.1 kilograms, the RX10 V is not truly compact, but it is dramatically lighter and smaller than a full-frame body accompanied by lenses covering 24mm through 600mm.
Autofocus, Handling and Performance

Sony has also brought the camera closer to its Alpha mirrorless system. Artificial intelligence recognizes people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and airplanes. The improved grip, AF-ON button, focus joystick, 3.68-million-dot OLED viewfinder, UHS-II card support and NP-FZ100 battery make it a much more credible working camera. Battery life reaches approximately 630 photographs when using the rear monitor.
The 30-frame-per-second burst rate is impressive, but photographers should consider whether they genuinely need this speed. It can be valuable for birds in flight, motorsports, aviation and fast-moving field sports, but it also produces enormous numbers of files that must later be reviewed and stored. Speed is useful only when supported by disciplined shooting and an efficient editing workflow.
A Capable Hybrid Video Camera

Video capabilities are equally serious. The RX10 V records uncropped 4K at up to 60p and cropped 4K at 120p, with 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, All-Intra compression, S-Cinetone, S-Log3 and user-importable lookup tables. These capabilities make it useful for documentary production, wildlife video, travel reporting, corporate communications and online content creation.
However, the tilting screen is less useful for self-recording than a fully articulating display. The loss of the RX10 IV’s built-in neutral-density filter and pop-up flash also seems unnecessary at this price. A built-in neutral-density filter would have been especially useful for maintaining appropriate shutter speeds while filming outdoors at wide apertures.
Practical Use Cases

The RX10 V is particularly well suited to wildlife photographers who need reach without carrying a large telephoto lens. Aviation photographers can move quickly between aircraft on the ground and aircraft in flight. Sports photographers can cover both wider environmental scenes and distant action from a fixed seating position.
It also has considerable value for travellers who want one camera rather than a complete lens system. News gathering, municipal communications, construction documentation, utility inspections and insurance photography are additional use cases where speed, flexibility and reach may matter more than maximum sensor size.
The camera is less convincing for photographers who primarily create studio portraits, night photography, architectural images or large exhibition prints. Those applications benefit from larger sensors, interchangeable lenses, tilt-shift optics and greater control over depth of field.
The Value Proposition

My conclusion is that the RX10 V is not the best camera for maximum image quality. A modern mirrorless camera with appropriate lenses will produce better results, particularly in low light. Its strength is operational completeness.
For photographers who value one weather-resistant camera, one exceptional lens and almost every useful focal length, the RX10 V may be uniquely persuasive. Its price is high, but its convenience, autofocus performance and extraordinary optical range create a value proposition that no conventional camera kit can reproduce quite so neatly.
The RX10 V is therefore not simply a bridge camera. It is a specialized photographic system designed for people who would rather capture the image than stop to change lenses.
