A Canadian Perspective on Choosing the Future

Artificial intelligence is often discussed through the language of fear. News headlines warn about job losses, misinformation, cybersecurity, and the unknown consequences of increasingly capable machines. These concerns deserve careful attention, particularly in Canada where AI will increasingly influence healthcare, energy, education, public services, and critical infrastructure. However, focusing exclusively on risk is like driving a vehicle while staring only into the rearview mirror. Responsible drivers acknowledge hazards, but they keep their eyes on the road ahead. The same philosophy applies to artificial intelligence. A positive mindset is not blind optimism. It is the disciplined practice of identifying the future we want and deliberately steering toward it.

This perspective closely reflects the central theme explored by Reid Hoffman and Greg Beato in Superagency. Rather than viewing AI solely as a disruptive force, they argue that it has the potential to amplify human capability, creativity, and decision-making while acknowledging that governance, ethics, and thoughtful implementation remain essential. Steering Toward Opportunity

Imagine sailing across Lake Ontario. Every experienced captain studies the weather, understands the rocks beneath the surface, and monitors changing winds. Yet the captain does not spend the entire voyage fixated on every possible disaster. Instead, the destination remains firmly in sight while every course correction serves that objective.

Artificial intelligence demands the same mindset. Organizations that constantly ask, “What if AI fails?” often become paralyzed by caution. Organizations that ask, “What could AI help us achieve if we build it responsibly?” begin discovering practical applications that improve safety, efficiency, and service quality.

For Canadian municipalities and utilities, this might include predictive maintenance of water mains, earlier detection of electrical equipment failures, or improved emergency response planning. These are not science fiction. They are practical examples of technology serving people rather than replacing them.

Human Agency Remains the Centrepiece

The greatest misconception surrounding artificial intelligence is that humans will surrender control. In reality, well designed AI should increase human agency rather than diminish it. Just as a power drill did not eliminate the carpenter, AI does not eliminate human judgment. It extends what skilled professionals can accomplish.

Research from Ethan Mollick and colleagues similarly argues that AI is most effective when humans remain actively engaged as coaches, mentors, collaborators, and critical evaluators rather than passive recipients of machine generated answers. Canada has an opportunity to become a global leader by developing AI systems that reflect Canadian values of transparency, inclusion, privacy, and public accountability. Success will depend less on building the fastest algorithms than on earning the greatest public trust.

Optimism Requires Responsibility

Positive thinking should never become complacency. Artificial intelligence introduces legitimate concerns surrounding privacy, bias, cybersecurity, intellectual property, workforce transition, and explainability. Explainable AI research continues to demonstrate that trust grows when systems provide understandable reasons for their recommendations and when humans retain meaningful oversight. (arXiv⁠)

The healthiest mindset therefore combines optimism with discipline. Every innovation should be evaluated through technical validation, ethical review, cybersecurity assessment, and measurable public benefit. This balanced approach allows Canadians to embrace opportunity without ignoring responsibility.

Looking Beyond the Horizon

History consistently rewards societies that learn to master transformative technologies rather than fear them. Electricity, aviation, computers, and the Internet all generated uncertainty before becoming indispensable parts of modern life. Artificial intelligence appears to be following a similar path.

Perhaps the most important question is not whether AI will change Canada. That outcome is already unfolding. The more profound question is whether Canadians will become passive observers or active architects of that transformation. Every engineer, municipal leader, educator, healthcare professional, and citizen has an opportunity to shape how this technology serves future generations.

A positive mindset is therefore not wishful thinking. It is a strategic decision. By envisioning the future we hope to create, we improve our chances of building it while reducing the likelihood of the outcomes we wish to avoid.

As Canada expands its investment in artificial intelligence, should our greatest priority be technological leadership, ethical leadership, or can both objectives advance together?

How can Canadian utilities, municipalities, and governments encourage innovation while preserving the public trust that has long been one of Canada’s greatest national assets?
